Figuring Out Figurative Language

In addition to examining the elements and expositional effectiveness of essays, we will be perusing, pondering, and penning poetry.

What type of figurative language was used in that first sentence? (Hint: It’s Mrs. Rupp’s favorite!)

Part of our work will include assembling an interactive poetry notebook. It will be like a treasure box of terms, a rich resource from which to draw.

Oh, there’s another type of figurative language! Why was it a valuable tool in that sentence?

As we fill our poetic tool box, we will realize that figurative language is not just for poems. We will be able to construct more creative sentences and build more powerful essays, as well.

How is this possible? Another type of figurative language?! Which one? What kind of image did it create in your mind?

Figurative language might just be the best thing since sliced bread! Once you get a taste for it, you will start to dapple your writing with delicious words and phrases. Eventually, though, you will move from dabbling to deliberately “drenching” your drafts with these delightful desserts – mouthwatering metaphors, scrumptious similes, appetizing alliteration, and more. Mmmm…
